Last year, 135 people were killed and nearly 600,000 people were injured at work. Although it may seem too late for the actual person injured in an accident to make a report, the subsequent review or investigation can help prevent further accidents of a similar nature.
Collecting information regarding accidents in a systematic way can help identify the bigger picture and any trends developing. This can be a significant step into implementing methods to prevent further injuries.
The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR) requires employers, and other people in charge of work premises, to report and keep records of:
Our Accident Reporting online training course will give information regarding how to report an accident, what information should be reported, and what level of detail is required.
This training course is designed for managers responsible for accident reporting, first aid staff, team leaders, self-employed people, and any others involved in managing health and safety in the workplace.
This course is split into three sections:
It’s important to keep records that explain exactly what has happened, or what could have happened to draw attention to areas where safety needs to be looked at.
If your organisation has 10 or more employees it MUST have a way of recording any incidents, such as an Accident Book or electronic forms. However your organisation records incidents, the basic details which must be recorded will be the same. This section includes a downloadable Word or PDF Accident Report Form which can be adapted to suit your specific requirements and used in the workplace to record accidents.
This section also explains your responsibilities with regards to data protection, reporting to RIDDOR and why it is important to report accidents in a timely manner.
Work-related injuries which mean that you are off work, or unable to do your full range of normal duties, for more than 3 consecutive days - this means 4 days or more (not counting the day of the injury, but including any weekends or other rest days) must be recorded.
You can read about the specifics of what must be reported in the resource attached to the slide in this section.
This section discusses in detail exactly what details need to be recorded. Additional content is available at the end of the course which includes a list on what needs to be included in an Accident Report.
This section also includes what happens next after completing the Accident Report Form.
On completion of this Accident Reporting online training course it should be clear how important it is to report incidents that happen in your workplace and how important it is that your reports are as detailed as possible.
Good Accident Reporting helps to create a safer working environment.
It helps identify problems, and this can often be the first step in making sure the same accident doesn’t happen again.
There are interactive questions included within this course to ensure that you are understanding the content and the final part of the training is the test.
1. The background of accident reporting
2. What should be recorded
3. Creating an accident report
