This online Fire Awareness training course is for anyone who works in an education setting including nurseries, schools, colleges and universities as you are legally required to undertake fire awareness training. The course covers the danger of fire and smoke, fire hazards, fire prevention and emergency procedures.
Every year fire costs the UK over 8 billion pounds and takes around 315 lives.
1,000 of these fires are in schools with the more serious ones costing up to 3 million pounds each in damages.
The biggest fire risks to schools include arson, building combustibility, poor housekeeping, poor smoking controls, a lack of fire detection and a lack of fire protection including not having a sprinkler system.
School fires can range from small external rubbish fires to larger, more damaging internal fires that seriously affect the operation of a school. Sadly, the leading cause of fire in schools is arson. In fact, over half of school fires are started maliciously. Fires are often started out of school hours in the evening or within school holidays with material close at hand. School fires can cause long-term disruption and damage to the lives of staff and children, including their education. They can also cause both physical and mental damage.
This online Fire Awareness in Education training course provides you with the tools you need to protect yourself, your students and your colleagues from fire and its effects and it explains everything that you need to know about how to handle a fire at work. By the time you have finished this training, you will be able to recognise and manage different types of fire, you will have gained a strong understanding of fire hazards, smoke and its effects and what procedures to follow in an emergency.
The course is split into four sections:
This first section coves how a fire starts, what keeps it going and how a fire can spread through a building. It explains the tetrahedron (oxygen, heat, fuel) how a fire starts and the three ways in which fire can spread: conduction, convection and radiation.
It also explains the dangers associated with smoke, as smoke inhalation is the leading cause of fire related deaths in the UK and what to do in an emergency.
This second section covers health and safety signs that relate to fire safety including prohibition signs (e.g. no smoking signs), warning signs (e.g. danger, highly flammable liquid), safe condition signs (e.g. fire exit signs) and mandatory signs (e.g. fire door keep shut). In addition to these there are also fire safety signs that indicate the location or identity of fire-fighting equipment such as a fire extinguisher and fire actions signs that gives you instructions what to do in the event of a fire.
All workplaces will contain fire hazards, but you can take steps to reduce the risks. This section will help you to understand the types of hazards you might find in your school and good working practices that you can implement to reduce the risk of a fire starting.
It's important to know what to do in the event of a fire in order to avoid putting yourself or your colleagues in danger. This section sets out the emergency procedure to follow such as raising the alarm, calling emergency services, evacuating the building and meeting at the assembly point.
Each school should have a Fire Action Plan to include fire risk assessments and an evacuation plan and PEEP’s (Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan) if required. PEEP’s are individual plans created for those who require assistance or special arrangements in order to safely evacuate a building in an emergency, such as a fire. Take the time to familiarise yourself with your organisation’s Fire Action Plan so you know exactly what to do in the event of a fire.
This section also covers what you can do to help you to stay safe if there's a fire that you are unable to escape from.
This section helps you to identify the different types of fires and which fire extinguisher should be used for each type of fire.
To ensure you have understood the content there are interactive questions posed throughout this course for you to answer. Think carefully, as a pass rate applies.
