In this online GDPR UK in Education training course learn how and why you play a crucial part in complying with the UK GDPR at work to keep people's personal data safe - including children's data.
Working in education also means that you’re likely to handle special category data on a very regular basis. This GDPR UK in Education training course will help you to identify personal data and special category data, know how to keep children's data safe and to develop a clear understanding of the 7 Principles of the GDPR and how they apply to the work that you do in education.
The course is split into two sections.
This first section gives a brief overview of the history of GDPR and how the UK GDPR has come into being.
UK GDPR is the collective name for a few different pieces of data protection legislation.
The official name is the Data Protection, Privacy and Electronic Communications (Amendments etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations, but UK GDPR is much easier to remember.
This GDPR Essentials training course focuses only on the GDPR in the UK and also pays particular attention to how the Regulation affects the education sector.
This section also covers the definition of Personal Data, which is anything which identifies or could identify someone and Processing, which means doing anything with the data, even just storing it and also the roles of Data Controllers and Data Processors, the definition of Data Subject and the role of The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).
The 7 Principles of the GDPR form the backbone of the Regulation. These are:
Included in the above is also an added section of children’s data pertaining to the education sector. Children are considered vulnerable under the GDPR, so you need extra precautions and safeguards in place to process their data.
By the end of this section, you will understand what the seven principles are and what they mean for your role at work in the education sector. It will also explain why they are so important.
The responsibilities of the GDPR are all designed to create and uphold a set of individual rights. These are:
The course looks at the definitions of each of these different rights and what they actually mean. When handling children’s data, you should be particularly mindful about not making significant decisions based solely on automated processes.
On completion of this course, you will have an understanding of the 7 principles of the GDPR in the UK and background knowledge of what it aims to achieve and why it exists. The GDPR brings together years of laws in the UK into a single piece of legislation.
You will also understand how your school must have a lawful basis for processing people’s data and must do so openly and fairly; how the data you collect and use must be adequate, sufficient, fit for purpose, accurate, and necessary; how there must be safeguards in place for keeping people’s data secure and confidential, particularly if the data subject is a child and the schools responsibility to always be accountable for the processing it carries out.
By explaining the role that your school has to play under the GDPR, this course aims to help you understand the role that you play, working in the education sector.
Your school may be responsible for compliance with the Regulation, but they can’t do it without your help.
There are interactive questions throughout the course to ensure you understand the content and the course concludes with a test so be sure to listen carefully.
This course only takes 40 minutes to complete and you will be provided with a printable certificate upon course completion.
